Property Legislation News: Planning system 'must be clarified'

Rules surrounding planning permission should be made clear as a government priority, the Home Builders Federation has claimed. Steve Turner, head of communications at the organisation, noted that there is uncertainty about the new localism agenda. "The planning system has got to get sorted and they have got to get it functioning if they have got any chance of realising their ambition of increasing housing output," he pointed out. "The government has got to - as a matter of urgency - clarify the parameters of the new system." Mr Turner argued that the government also needs to convince UK mortgage lending companies to lend higher amounts to potential homeowners. This is important "particularly for first time buyers who are absolutely critical to the market and who have all but disappeared due to the lack of availability". His comments come after research from the Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers' Index showed there was a slight increase in house building last month after a four-month period of contraction.
